WHO IS ELIGIBLE
  • The recipient shall be a student enrolled in an accredited High School in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, for a minimum of eight (8) continuous months upon graduation.
  • The recipient shall have scholastic grades of a ''B'' average or better for his Junior Year and the first semester of his Senior Year in high school.
  • The recipient shall be of good moral character and have an aptitude for advanced learning.
WHAT TO DO
  • Take ACT test which is indicative of a student's probable ability to perform university level work. (See your high school principal.)
  • Contact your principal or counselor to obtain application forms for the Educational Scholarship Award.
  • Application forms must be filled out and returned after February 1st (to include semester grades) but not later than March 1st for processing.
PURPOSE

The purpose of this scholarship is to give aid, free and without obligation, to a promising young student of St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, to help make a college education financially possible for a student who needs or desires such support, and who is interested in a professional career.

BENEFITS

One (4) four year scholarship will be awarded each year in the amount of $4,000.00, payable at the rate of $500.00 per semester.

REQUIREMENTS & LIMITATIONS
  • Only one (1) student shall be selected for this scholarship per calendar year.
  • The student will be required to maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA for the first through the fourth semester and a 3.0 GPA for the fifth through eighth semester while in college. These averages to be calculated over each academic year or a spring and fall period and shall be computed on a (4) four point grade system.
  • The student must complete sufficient semester hours as required by the University to obtain a degree in eight semesters.
  • This Scholarship may be used to attend any accredited university or college.
  • The recipient shall be selected and be publicly recognized on or before graduation from High School. A letter of acceptance specifying the university to be attended is required.
  • Scholarship money shall be paid to the College or University Office of the Auditor or Director of Financial Aid, with the student being permitted to draw at the basic rate of $500.00 per semester.
  • The recipient must make formal request to the University for entrance approval, immediately upon graduation from High School.
  • A Scholarship holder whose college career has been interrupted by military service may apply for re-instatement of his scholarship after completion of military service.
  • The SMIG Scholarship Committee will base its final decision on the applicant's high school scholastic records, character, qualities of leadership, seriousness of purpose and results of ACT test.
  • The decision of the SMIG Scholarship Committee will be final.
  • The scholarship holder shall maintain standards of good moral character at all times during the life of the scholarship and any failure to maintain these standards shall, at the discretion of the scholarship committee, result in the withdrawal of the remaining scholarship benefits.
